The traditional 5-day school week, modeled after the 5-day work week, has been in place for generations. However, some studies have indicated that a 4-day school week consisting of longer school days may be beneficial for students. During a 4-day week with longer days, students would be in class the same number of hours as a 5-day week, but still would enjoy three day weekends. Proponents of this view argue that students, not to mention school staff, would benefit from having one additional day off of school to do their work, participate in sports, or do other activities that they wouldn’t ordinarily have time for. On the other hand, others argue that a three day weekend would limit how much students learn each week and increase the amount they forget from week to week. In your opinion, should schools adopt a 4-day school week with longer hours each day?
